Soweto Derby mobile voting
The Soweto Derby at Johannesburg’s Soccer City captured the public imagination this afternoon with a unique and interactive mobile component, making history in the Carling Black Label Cup, featuring Soweto giants Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium.

South African football fans had to buy the brewing giant’s beer in order to cast their vote for their favourite players via mobile. Fans could make one of three permitted substitutions in each team by sending a mobile phone message before half-time to indicate which player should be replaced. By the time the voting closed, just over 10.5 million votes were cast by supporters.

Voting revealed that the most popular footballers at the clubs are goalkeepers, with Chiefs’ “Spider” Itumeleng Khune garnering 1 485 083 votes and Pirates’ fit-again “Slim Kat” Moeneeb Josephs receiving 761 622 positive votes. Khune played for South Africa against Mexico and Uruguay in the 2010 World Cup and was banned after being sent off in the second match, while Josephs took his place in a victory over France.

Chiefs coach Vladimir Vermezovic was upset a few days before voting closed when he discovered that star midfielder and national team vice-captain Siphiwe Tshabalala was not in the line-up. The children who idolise Siphiwe could not vote for him because it was required that you had to buy beer in order to vote for your selected player.

THE PLAYERS WITH MOST VOTES WERE:
