Blackberry Bold 9900. The thinnest Blackberry ever.

Blackberry Bold 9900
Blackberry owners everywhere have been waiting for this moment for a very, very long time. The Blackberry Bold 9900 will finally deliver the best of three worlds in one handset: (1) the convenience and modernism of touch, (2) combined with the practicality and familiarity of the Blackberry QWERTY keyboard, (3) without hiding the keyboard away in a slide mechanism (like its not-so-popular cousin the Blackberry Torch).

Blackberry is promising that this will be their thinnest smartphone yet. Another tick for Bold lovers. The spec sheet also claims that there’s going to be a lot more power in this puppy: a 1.2GHz processor and 8GB of expandable memory. That’s double the processing power of RIM’s current Bold star, the 9780.

The 9900 will also bump Blackberry into the HD video recording ring, which it’s been conspicuously absent from for quite a while. Though some critics (and Blackberry purists) believe that this road is a dangerous one for RIM. They argue that RIM’s secret sauce is their ‘email machine’ focus and that straying away from their fundamental strength will (1) not speak to their audience and (2) contribute to their continued downfall. The lackluster sales figures of the Blackberry Playbook would seem to support this notion.

Perhaps it would be best for Blackberry to do what they’ve always done best: email and communication. The good news is that this is going to be delivered in spades in the form of the 9900. The handset will feature Blackberry 7 OS and a vastly superior touch screen experience to what the Storm 1 confronted us with a few years ago. RIM has had a chance to iron out all the kinks over the various generations of phones, giving the 9900 all the genetic wherewithal to hit the ground running.

So all that’s left to ask now is: when is it coming to South Africa? The official answer is ‘sometime in August’. As usual, the shops don’t have a clue as to an exact date and will most likely only have confirmation when they see the stock rolling into their stores the night before they go on sale. I know that Pat, for one, will be in the queue as soon as that magical moment arrives. And by the sounds of what’s to come, so should you.
